South Bend, Indiana, is well-known as the home of the University of Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s College. It is located on the St. Joseph River near its southernmost bend, and that’s how the city got its name!

For many years, South Bend was home to Studebaker, which shut down in the 1960s. The city declined in population when Studebaker closed, but is now growing again. The old Studebaker plants are gone; in their place is Ignition Park, a technology center that is attracting new industry.

South Bend has been featured in the national news this year. Pete Buttigieg, who served two terms as Mayor, was a candidate in the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries.
